There was a rumor spreding around here that the Caribou would run between Digby and Saint John in the near future as well as it's sistership the J&C Smallwood running from Yarmouth to New England. Well, those rumors can be put to rest. They are sold to foreign interests. The Caribou is owned by a company from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines while the Smallwood is now owned by the Marshall Islands. The latest indications have them sold for scrap making a bad situation even more horrible than I could have imagined. Here's a link to the news article. Another note to pass along: the terminal in Saint John would've been too shallow to accomodate one of these vessels. The depth at low tide at the ramp from what I read is around 4 meters, the Caribou has a 6.6 meter loaded draught, so, re-location or dredging would've been required. Now, what vessel will go to New England and what vessel will be the "new" Digby ferry will be up in the air for a while yet.
