Titanic expeditions/salvage operations

This is a significant date in the fabled story of Titanic, she would have arrived today in New York.  Instead, the cable ship MacKay-Bennett  left the port of Halifax, bound for her disaster site.  It's mission:  to bring those who lost their lives home, most buried at sea.  Which brings me to my next installment, the discovery and expeditions to the wreck.  After being discovered in 1985, there were salvage expeditions from 1987 until the early 2000's, then hoping to keep the memory of the great ship alive.  My opinion:  This should have NEVER happened.  It's an international grave and I'm very opposed to anyone or any organization salvaging and looting from the site.  Film, map, photograph, visit all you want, just don't take anything.  The United States have already passed legislation on the wreck, now it's Canada's turn to do the same, and, hopefully sooner than later.  Another piece of good news for this is that the wreck is now protected by UNESCO as of Sunday April 15, 2012.  More on the Titanic coming in the next blog.

Update, 04/18/12:  The UNESCO designation does not mean she's free from salvagers and looters, let's hope Canada does the same as the United States and pass some legislation to protect the wreck site from salvage activities.
