The last in a series of blogs dedicated to the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic
It's one century ago tonight that RMS Carpathia arrived in New York city with the survivors of the Titanic disaster. In my final installment in the series dedicated to the ill-fated liner, I want to talk about a few theories and one which I find totally obsurd: The conspiracy theory. Some people think it was Titanic's sister ship, RMS Olympic that sank as an insurance scam from the White Star Line. A lot of nonesense to me. RMS Olympic, which was later scrapped in 1935, had an open promenade deck, Titanic's was half closed in. On the wreck, it was a closed-in promenade. More proof is the number 401 (Harland and Wolff's hull number for Titanic) was found on the propellor blade, and on some floating debris at the disaster site. If it was Olympic that sank, the number 400 would have been found on the items mentioned.
We will never know when Titanic really broke apart, as her lights were out when the break up occured. Most likely at a 10-11 degree angle when she started breaking up. Nothing would be proven on when she did break, however, we can speculate about it.
