Opinion: Former Blue Star Ithaki suitable for new route

Pictured here in a photo I took last Sunday, the former Blue Star Ithaki (now temporarily named Canada2014) undergoing refit for her new service connecting Digby and Saint John sometime this year.  There are people questioning if the ship would be adequate for the route.  In my view she is and would be very seaworthy for the Bay of Fundy service.  Passenger vehicles would go on the top deck while commercial customers (tractor trailers) would use the bottom deck.  From what I'm hearing, passenger vehicle space on top vehicle deck is 65 cars/trucks while bottom truck deck has space for 15-21 commercial units. Her vehicle deck arrangement is similar to that of the Bluenose ferry that connected Yarmouth and Bar Harbor from 1983 until 1997.  The Bluenose was 125m (412ft) in length while the former Blue Star Ithaki is 123.8m (406ft) in length.  Another fact is that during the Marine Atlantic era, the Bluenose filled in for the Princess of Acadia on a few occasions as the vessel went for refit. In my view, there is no need for a big ship on the Saint John-Digby route and I feel this ship can accomodate everyone year round. The need for a newer boat was long overdue and now, we finally got a newer vessel that would ply the Bay of Fundy soon. Unless there is truth to this article I found yesterday.  Hopefully not though.  UPDATE: April 10, 2015 No truth to the article at all and it has been removed.  More here
